The Rabbit Hole Has Wi-Fi

Does the system exist to serve people?/A rendszer van az emberért?

Does the system exist to serve people, or do people exist to serve the system?

Should the system nourish people, or should people nourish the system?

I’m asking because I wonder how okay it really is that suicide is one of the leading causes of death among children and adolescents. That alone is deeply troubling and raises a lot of questions. Adults keep telling us, “You’ll miss your childhood when you’re older!” and “Your teenage years are the best time of your life!”

But is that really true? Or is it nostalgia and the tendency to romanticise our memories talking? Or do we simply not want to confront the past?

How do childhood experiences lead to CPTSD? How can seemingly insignificant but prolonged experiences of rejection lead to CPTSD? And what does any of this have to do with autism and ADHD?

To what extent does the way we were perceived as children shape our adult identity and our self-image? What about our social relationships, our sense of belonging, or the lack thereof? And where do autism and ADHD fit into all this?

I have so many more questions that I couldn’t possibly write them all down. Some have been researched extensively, while others have received far less attention. But now I’m going to dive into this subject myself, and my plan is to go pretty deep. I don’t just want to read popular science books or university textbooks. I want to read actual academic papers and research studies.

And why?

Because I want to understand, examine, take things apart, and arrive at some kind of conclusion. What kind of conclusion? I have theories and ideas of my own, but I’m not obsessively looking for ways to prove them right. I want the facts to speak instead of emotions. I’m not only going to look at what supports my views, but also at what directly contradicts them. Because sometimes the answers to our questions are uncomfortable, and they can reshape our worldview. And no matter how much we try to understand the world through our own experiences, reality is far more complex than any individual’s lived experience.

And why this particular subject and set of questions?

Yes, there’s a personal element to it. My own experiences and the way I’ve lived through them are part of it, but what matters much more is that most of my friends have gone through similar things. They’re all wonderful, intelligent, curious people who should never have had to see themselves as losers or failures.

And looking at the groups dedicated to these topics, the situation doesn’t seem much better there, either. And these are only the people who dare to, and are able to, speak up on some kind of public platform. What about those who don’t have the means to do so?

I simply refuse to believe that there’s nothing I can do. Especially when I’m one of the lucky ones who somehow managed to scrape their way through a master’s degree and may actually have a chance to take things further from here.

I refuse to believe that a system that causes so much suffering and sorrow is normal. And I refuse to believe that we should put up with it in silence, or at most serve it up wrapped in glitter so as not to disturb the peace.

So, dear reader, in addition to my creative brain rambles, my highway design engineers, and my raccoons, this is going to become another topic on The Rabbit Hole has Wi-Fi. I’m going to dive deep into the subject and share where I am in the process, what conclusions I reach, and what academic literature I’ve used along the way. I’ll keep the emotional weight and my own interpretations as far removed from these posts as possible, but I won’t promise that I won’t ask uncomfortable questions.

This is especially important because October is ADHD Awareness Month. So now the question is: are we willing to face the different faces of ADHD, or are we only willing to acknowledge the cute and funny “Oh, I forgot my keys again” part?
