How my Excellent Degree Became the Symbol of My Failure/Hogyan lett a jeles diplomám a bukásom szimbóluma
Serious content warning, because sometimes we need one of those. (A magyar verzió lentebb)
I was never proud of my degree. Even though I graduated with excellent results, even though I know I worked my ass off, I always felt that what I had achieved, what I had done, was too little. That I had merely survived. That I had come out of it with far less than I had wanted. That I had failed to reach the potential I had inside me. And not only was that potential there — I wanted to reach it. And so, my excellent master’s degree became a symbol of my failure. A symbol of the possibility that maybe I simply didn’t have nearly as much potential as I thought I did. That I wasn’t enough. That even working together with fellow students was difficult when it came to splitting up a textbook and taking notes on it, because making my learning process understandable to other people consumed an insane amount of energy. Only for me to then have to read the rest of the book anyway, because I couldn’t understand their logic either.
That remembering names and dates was absolute torture, and although I could connect relationships and patterns with ridiculous ease, remembering the name of the last Franciscan friar was enough to drain so much of my cognitive capacity that there was simply nothing left for anything else.
That no matter how many times I had read the novels, short stories, poems, I was incapable of recognizing them the way other people did. So I had to consciously identify patterns for every single work, write them down, and memorize them. Things like punctuation peculiarities. Names. How long the lines of a particular poem were. And no, this wasn’t because I didn’t understand them. It wasn’t because I didn’t know what they were about, or because I couldn’t tear them apart, analyze them, dissect their characters down to the smallest detail. There was a period in my life when reading two books a week was the norm. Sometimes three.
I simply don’t recognize excerpts. Period. Not unless I have a very strong connection to the work. And even then, not always. The names, the locations — they just disappear, as if they had never been there in the first place.
Whenever I had to memorize huge amounts of names and dates, I failed miserably as well. It drained everything out of me. I simply cannot remember isolated pieces of information. But if they were placed into a coherent system of connections, things would have become much easier.
The problem was that because of the sheer amount of material expected of me and the limited time available, I couldn’t make use of this otherwise very strong capacity of mine.
I was barely ever given the opportunity to show what I was actually good at and what I was actually strong in.
Because they expected a heron to go deep-sea diving.
And yes, that is how my excellent master’s degree from the best university in the country became a symbol of my failure.
And I still haven’t completely managed to shed that feeling.
Even now, I’m not able to look at this degree as a success story. As something I can be proud of.
But something is changing.
Because I can’t spend the rest of my life experiencing every achievement I make as a failure.
Now I know that the vision I had of what I could have achieved was real. I have the capacity for it. I have the ability. I have the determination, the consistency (even if not always in a form that is digestible to other people), and the curiosity.
It’s just that the system uses a scale that I struggle to fit myself onto.
Recognizing my AuDHD has helped with that. For the first time, it has finally been said out loud: I am not broken.
Sosem voltam büszke a diplomámra.
Például a központozás sajátosságait. A neveket. A nevek, helyszínek kitörlődnek, mintha soha ott sem lettek volna.
Ott, ahol be kellett magolni rengeteg nevet, évszámot, szintén elvéreztem.
