My Dear Mental Trash Bin / Az én drága mentális szemetesládám

(A magyar verzióhoz görgess lejjebb)

I don’t want to turn this whatever-it-is into a TED Talk, or some big self-awareness/self-exploration/whatever blog. That was never the point.

Quite the opposite: I want it to become a mental trash bin where I can throw out all the garbage in my head before it piles up again on the highway, and I end up not knowing which way I’m facing.

My ADHD wants to build the highway at such a speed that my autism can barely keep up with building the structure around it — and if the poor thing also has to deal with traffic control, we’re all going to die. And that is definitely the better-case scenario!

People sometimes say that people like me have 400 tabs open in their heads at the same time, and I used that metaphor for a while too. But I like this highway analogy much better.

So, I have two highway design engineers who, with some difficulty and quite a bit of arguing with each other, still somehow manage to do their jobs. And then there’s me, the project manager, trying to prevent the whole thing from turning into complete chaos.

But the highway isn’t only designed; it’s also used: by cars, motorbikes, trucks, and we’re happy if the cyclists and tractors stay off it, but you can never be sure. In my case, these are thoughts.

And thoughts can sometimes do some incredibly weird and incomprehensible things, like entering the highway from the wrong direction. Or turning around halfway through. Or trying out the rocket launch site.

And then comes the crash.

Unfortunately, nobody applied for the traffic controller position.

All this chaos can very easily turn into a kind of decision paralysis: when there are 600 things I need to do, I can just sit there and stare into space like someone surrounded by snakes who is too scared to move.

It’s really bad.

That’s why I need the project manager, who sometimes puts on the traffic controller costume.

And sometimes the solution isn’t to clear the most important intersection, but to divert the incoming traffic for damage control. That’s how I sometimes end up not working on the most important task, but on anything that at least reduces the damage and prevents an even bigger traffic jam.

Meanwhile, the two engineers are widening the highway for everything else.

So yeah, the blog partly came into existence as a form of damage control, and partly because I want to show what I create and how I create it.

And how a complex highway system actually works.

And how the hell is it possible that if I sit down to write something, I can produce a 60,000-character drama with character descriptions and everything in three days, without even getting tired, while picking up a pen from the floor feels like I’m trying to move Mount Everest a little bit to the side.

——————-

Aztán vagyok én, a projektmenedzser, aki próbálja a teljes káoszt elkerülni.

Aztán jön a karambol.
