The Rabbit Hole Has Wi-Fi

Tarot project

A -> B -> Red Bull+kokain -> Z -> egy rég bezárt pszichiátriai intézet -> kiskutya -> GY -> szakajtó -> hároméves kori trauma -> valami produktum, amit elnevezhetünk X-nek.

A saját tarot paklim is valami ilyen elcseszett módon épül a tetoválóművészemmel karöltve.

Megpróbálom különböző perspektívákból szemlélni, tarot olvasókat hallgatni, olyanokkal beszélni, akik maguk is használják, plusz könyveket olvasni. Mint ahogy a képen látható The neuroscience of tarot című könyvet is.

A lot of people think that creating is a spontaneous and mysterious process, something that just comes out of nowhere, much like slugs appearing after a good summer rain. It’s intuitive, it just comes to you; the person creating somehow sucks it down from the heavens through a straw or whatever.

But creative work is nothing more than hardcore system-building. Well, it can be, at least, if you’re not trying to make the 167th version of the exact same thing. You could say there’s a 3D puzzle in my head that I have to put together, except I wasn’t given a picture of what it’s supposed to look like. They also forgot to tell me whether I’m trying to build a circus or a spaceship. And it has at least 20,000 pieces. And of course, it’s not even linear. It’s more like:

A → B → Red Bull + cocaine → Z → a long-abandoned psychiatric hospital → puppy → GY → bread basket → three-year-old trauma → some product we’ll call X.

My own tarot deck is also being built in more or less this fucked-up way, together with my tattoo artist. Because, obviously, I can’t draw, so I absolutely need a partner. Which, to be fair, is not a problem at all: when two artists put their heads together, the result can be much better, more visually interesting, and more exciting. We can become catalysts for each other while both remaining autonomous artists.

So, a tarot deck of my own. But it’s not enough to know what the cards mean and simply draw something new for them. I need a new narrative while keeping the original foundation intact. A unique voice, a unique style, a little accompanying book with a more personal interpretation. Something more modern, adapted to the world we live in today. But even that isn’t enough:

What will it make the reader feel? What do I want it to make the reader feel? What kinds of associations might the colors, the wording, the characters, etc. evoke? Where could the whole thing go wrong? Where do I want to leave room for the reader’s own interpretation, and where do I want to be very clear? And, generally speaking: what the hell am I actually trying to communicate? And most importantly: what’s the story here? And how, for fuck’s sake, do I make this deck a coherent, cohesive story instead of a collection of randomly pretty cards?

A thousand other questions are running through my head as well. I’m trying to look at it from different perspectives, listening to tarot readers, talking to people who actually use tarot, and reading books. Like The Neuroscience of Tarot, the book you can see in the picture. Not because I have infinite amounts of time, obviously, but because, much like the Hanged Man, I’m looking for another way of interpreting things and another possible starting point.

So yes, creating is a very spontaneous task, my friends.
